The High Point University women's basketball team limited Coastal Carolina to just 29.7 percent shooting to pick up the 62-48 win over the Chanticleers on Monday night in Conway, S.C. It was the seventh time in nine games that HPU has limited its opponent to less than 60 points.

“This was yet another great team effort on the defensive end here tonight,” head coach Tooey Loy said. We took the right shots and made the right plays offensively but we just didn't have a good shooting night. This team is really coming together; they are pulling for one another and are focused on what we have to do. If we shoot it well in the tournament then anything can happen.”

Junior Shamia Brown and sophomore Erin Reynolds each scored 14 points to lead High Point which improves to 14-13 overall and 8-6 in the Big South. With the win, the Panthers move back over .500 for the first time since they were 6-5 on Dec. 11.

Sydnei Moss scored a game-high 15 points for CCU who falls to 9-18 overall and 3-12 in conference play.

High Point and Coastal were deadlocked at 12-12 with just under eight minutes left in the first half when Reynolds connected on a mid-range jumper to spark an 18-0 run over the next four minutes as the Panthers took a 30-12 lead with four minutes left in the first half. Reynolds scored seven points in the run while senior Mackenzie Maier chipped in with six on two three pointers.

Moss connected on a jumper for CCU to end the run for the Panthers but HPU still carried a 34-18 lead into the break as Brown scored with eight seconds remaining on a fade away jumper to give High Point the 16-point advantage. Brown led all scorers with eight points in the first half for High Point. After missing their first 12 three pointers, the Panthers closed the half shooting 5-8 from behind the arc.

HPU limited CCU to just seven field goals in the first half as the Chanticleers shot just 24.1 percent (7-29) in the opening 20 minutes. High Point forced six turnovers in the half and out-rebounded Coastal by a 28-20 margin.

The Panthers continued their strong defense in the second half, never allowing Coastal to pull back within single digits in the period. The closest the Chanticleers managed to get was within 13 points, 53-40, with eight minutes remaining, but HPU responded with a 7-2 burst to bring its lead back to 18 at 60-42 with just under four minutes remaining.

After blocking 13 shots at Winthrop, High Point blocked eight shots against the Chanticleers with six coming from Maier who now has 289 and is within three career blocks of the Big South record which is currently held by Radford's Kelli Darden.

Freshman Cheyenne Parker scored 10 points in 16 minutes to join Reynolds and Brown in double figures for the Panthers. Brown grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go along with her 14 points while Maier led High Point in assists with three.

With the road portion of its schedule complete, HPU will return home for the final weekend of the regular season when the Panthers will play host to Radford and UNC Asheville. High Point will play the Highlanders on Friday, March 4, at 7 p.m. In the squads' first meeting the Highlanders picked up a 68-63 overtime win in Radford, Va.
