BOX SCORE

The High Point University women's lacrosse team scored four of the last five goals in the final 11 minutes but couldn't make the comeback, taking an 11-8 loss to Navy on Sunday afternoon in Annapolis, Md. HPU's Jasmine Jordan scored two goals and Christie Dougherty had a goal, three ground balls and two draw controls.

"We started off strong and we were playing with a lot of confidence but we fell into a slump for about 10 minutes and they ran all over us," said HPU head coach Lyndsey Boswell. "Navy is more physical than any team we have played and probably more physical than any team we will play this season. They have a very good goalie. Our defense was outstanding for the entire game. They did everything we asked, but we have things to work on, offensively."

"Playing in Annapolis was almost like a home game since most of our team is from this area," said Boswell. "We had great support for a road game, I just wish we could have gotten a win for them."

The Panthers fell to 1-2 overall while Navy improved to 5-0.

In addition to her two goals, Jordan grabbed two ground balls out of the midfield. Sophomore attack Grace Gaeng had two assists and two ground balls and midfielder Heather Ziccarelli led HPU with four ground balls and scored a goal. Sophomore Lauren Hayes made six saves in the cage for the Panthers.

Navy's Aimee Gennaro scored four goals, had an assist and two ground balls and Kathy Young scored twice with an assist and two ground balls. Jen Eikenberg had five draw controls to lead all players and Navy's Claire Olechowski and Katrina Nietsch each grabbed five ground balls. Navy goalie Elaina Ponchione made seven saves, including six in the second half. Navy led draw controls, 14-7, in the game and had 33 fouls to HPU's nine in the second half.

Navy's Gennaro scored the first goal of the game five minutes in before HPU's Sara Kuhlman tied it with her sixth goal of the year 33 second later. After Gennaro and Molly Hamilton scored for Navy, Chelsea Thompson netted one for HPU on an assist from Dougherty. Ziccarelli's goal with 4:03 left in the first got HPU within a goal (4-3) before Navy scored two more to take a 6-3 lead into the intermission.

Out of the break, Navy scored the first three goals to take a commanding 9-3 lead with under 20 minutes left in the game. High Point's Ashleigh Kassab got the attack restarted with a free-position goal with 15:10 left in the game and HPU scored five of the last seven goals from then on.

Down 11-5 with under 10 minutes left, High Point's Doughtery, Jordan and Alec Perry netted scores. Perry's came on a free-position shot with 21 seconds left in the game to make it an 11-8 final.

The Panthers are back in action with two games this week – HPU heads to Presbyterian for its first National Lacrosse Conference game on Thursday (4 p.m.) before hosting Mount St. Mary's on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Vert Stadium.
