Men's track finishes fifth at Big South Indoor Championship

The High Point University men's track and field team finished in fifth at the 2011 Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships with a total of 56 points in the two-day event held at Clemson, S.C. Senior TJ Brancaccio won his first Big South individual title by finishing first in the pole vault.

Liberty claimed the Big South Indoor Track team championship with a total score of 198. VMI finished in second with a score of 113 while Charleston Southern came in third with a score of 108.50.

Brancaccio cleared a height of 15-3, four inches higher than the second-place finisher. The vault tied the senior's season high which he has cleared two other times this season. Junior Jacob Mathews tied his personal best with a vault of 14-3.25 to finish fourth in the event.

Junior Neal Darmody picked up 14 points for the Panthers by finishing in the top three in both the 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs. Darmody finished the 5,000-meter run second with a time of 14:25.39 and came in third in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:29.01. The senior's 5,000-meter time is a new personal best.

Sophomore Jacob Smith also earned points in two separate events, finishing fifth in the 3,000-meter run and sixth in the mile. In the 3,000, Smith finished with a time of 8:35.02 and in the Mile he finished with a time of 4:23.59.

Senior Justin Conaway finished second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.92 to pick up eight points for the Panthers. The time marks a new season best for the senior.

Junior Alex Fisher earned five points for HPU by finishing fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.27, a new personal best for the junior.

Senior Corey Grove rounded out the individual scorers for HPU by finishing seventh in the 800-meter run. Grove finished with a time of 1:57.62, a new season-best.

High Point earned points in both relays, finishing sixth in the distance medley relay and seventh in the 4x400-meter relay.

The Panthers distance medley relay team of Grove, Smith, junior Sebastien Bonnot and freshman Patrick Crawford combined for a time of 10:38.19 to finish in sixth place.

HPU's 4x400-meter relay squad was comprised of Bonnot, Smith and freshmen Evan Emery and Tristan Faure finished with a time of 3:30.95, a new season best for HPU.

The Panthers will cap off the indoor season when select athletes compete in the Last Chance Qualifiers on March 4-5.
