BOX SCORE
The High Point University men's soccer team took a 2-0 loss on the road at Gardner-Webb Saturday in Big South Conference action.
"Gardner-Webb is an organized, well-coached team and deserved the result tonight," said HPU head coach
Dustin Fonder. "Our group has a lot of soul searching to do if we want to win soccer games. Luckily, we still have time to get it right for the Big South Tournament."
With the loss HPU falls to 5-8-2, 2-4-1 Big South while Gardner-Webb improves to 8-6-2, 5-2-0 Big South.
Gardner-Webb led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Jon Ole Reinhardsen in the 35th minute. The unassisted goal was his second of the season.
GWU held a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal at the half. Reinhardsen had two of the Bulldogs shots on net.
Karo Okiomah and
Alex Martinez had one each for the Panthers.
Chris Davis gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a 2-0 lead with his fifth goal in the season. In the 58th minute Davis collected a through ball, beat the HPU defender and with his left foot slotted the ball inside the far post. The ball was just out of reach of a diving
Michael Chesler.
Martinez had a dangerous shot in the 77th minute but GWU goalie Scott Krotee got his fingertips on the ball and punched it over the net. Martinez almost scored in the final minute of the game but his team-leading fourth shot of the game went just wide.
The Panthers had six shots on goal, including three by
Karo Okiomah. Gardner-Webb managed four shots on goal with two each by Reinhardsen and Davis. Chesler made two saves in the loss.
