Men's soccer loses close game at Radford, 1-0

BOX SCORE

The High Point University men's soccer team fell on the road to Radford University by a score of 1-0 in a back and forth game on Saturday night in Radford, Va.

“Despite the result there were some positives to take from this game,” head coach Dustin Fonder said. “I was really impressed with the competitive nature of the group tonight and the unified performance we put out there. We are extremely disappointed we didn't get the result tonight but we are not going to let one result snowball. Now we will get back to work, train hard and give our best effort in the upcoming games.”

With the loss HPU falls to 4-7-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the Big South in 2011. Radford moves to 7-6-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the Big South with the win.

The Panthers' best chance of the opening half came in the 43rd minute when a corner kick from junior Shawn Sloan found freshman Mamadee Nyepon at the back post. The freshman managed to snap a header towards goal but it ran just outside the post.

High Point earned a dangerous free kick in the center of the pitch just outside the box in the 57th minute when the Radford keeper Dane Wilson handled the ball in a scrum outside the penalty area. Sloan lined up over the ball and tried to hit a hard shot under the Radford wall. The shot was blocked out to sophomore Adam Sewell who rocketed a shot from 25-yards that ran wide of the right post.

Radford broke the scoreless tie in the 76th minute when Anthony Payne unleashed a low knuckler from 40-yards out. The shot was initially stopped by goalkeeper Michael Chesler but spun off the senior and into the net to put the Highlanders up, 1-0.

Redshirt-junior Kendall Lawson had a shot to tie the game in the 87th minute when he headed a ball down to himself on the left side of the box. The midfielder turned and rifled a shot to the far post, forcing a diving save by Wilson.

High Point had one last chance to tie the game in the closing seconds when a ball played into the box was fumbled by Wilson and dropped at the right post. The Highlanders just managed to clear the ball off an HPU player and over the end line to avert the threat as time expired.

The Panthers finished with 11 shots including three on goal while Radford finished with 14 shots and matched HPU with three shots on frame. Chesler had two saves in the game for High Point.

HPU returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 19 when the team will host Presbyterian College at Vert Stadium at 7 p.m. The Blue Hose are 2-10-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the Big South this season after a 1-0 loss at Liberty Friday. The Panthers are 3-3-1 in seven all-time matches against PC.
