The High Point University men's soccer team fell to No. 20 Coastal Carolina by a score of 2-0 in Big South action on Wednesday night at Vert Stadium. High Point put up 17 shots in the game including six by sophomore
Adam Sewell.
“Our performance just wasn't good enough tonight,” head coach
Dustin Fonder said. “We let Coastal dictate the tempo and outwork us in areas we wanted to outwork them in. Credit to them, they earned a hard-fought three points. We need to get better throughout the course of the rest of our regular season games and get ready for the tournament.
The loss drops High Point to 4-6-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the Big South. Coastal Carolina improves to 10-2-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the Big South.
HPU almost got on the board in the sixth minute of action when junior
Shane Malcolm got behind the Coastal defense but CCU keeper Scott Angevine came off his line and made a close-range save, knocking the ball out towards the sideline to keep the game scoreless.
Just three minutes later it was the Chanticleers who took the early 1-0 lead on a shot by Pedro Ribeiro from 30 yards out that tucked into the net just below the crossbar. Shawn McLaws hit a square ball across to Ribeiro who took one touch to settle before hitting the hard liner.
Coastal doubled its lead in the 49th minute when a throw in from Robby Joe Daniels fell right to the feet of TeeJay East two yards in front of HPU's goal. The freshman one-touched the ball into the net to put the Chanticleers up 2-0.
The Panthers' best scoring chance in the second half came in the 60th minute HPU drew a foul in the center of the pitch and sophomore
Alex Martinez hit a free kick which split the CCU wall and ran in on goal. Unfortunately for High Point, Angevine managed to move to his left and make the save, preserving the two-goal lead for Coastal.
HPU next returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 15, when the Panthers hit the road to take on Radford University at 6 p.m. The Highlanders are 5-6-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the Big South this season after a 4-1 win at home against VMI on Wednesday. Last season, a 10-man High Point squad managed to come back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to win, 2-1, thanks to goals by Malcolm and
Shawn Sloan.
