The High Point women's basketball team forced 18 turnovers and held Winthrop to just 49 points on the way to a 64-49 win over the Eagles on Monday night in the Millis Center. Winthrop's point total was the lowest for any Division I opponent of HPU this season.
Sophomore
Erin Reynolds scored 18 points and dished out four assists in her first start of the season to lead the Panthers on the night.
“This was a hard fought victory tonight,” head coach Tooey Loy said. “We were a little short handed but we really battled and played great defense. We took away everything they wanted to do. Offensively we really got going in the second half. We've picked up two victories in a row and now we need to go on the road and keep it going.”
High Point improves to 9-10 overall and 3-3 in the Big South with win while Winthrop drops to 9-9 overall and 3-3 in the Big South.
Neither team was able to establish a rhythm offensively early in the game and with eight minutes left in the first half the score remained tied at 12-12. High Point opened the game shooting just 4-16 from the floor with nine turnovers, but the Panthers forced eight turnovers of their own and blocked three shots to limit the WU attack.
Reynolds roused the dormant Panther offense with 10-straight points for HPU to put High Point up five, 22-17, with five minutes left in the half. Reynolds hit a runner and a quick pull up jumper before connecting on back-to-back three pointers.
The Panthers would extend its lead to seven at the break, taking a 27-20 lead into the locker room. Reynolds finished the half with 12 points to lead all scorers. The Panthers forced 12 turnovers while allowing its second-lowest halftime point total of the season.
With just over 14 minutes left in the game and High Point leading by nine, 41-32, Winthrop went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to pull within one at 41-40. The Panthers responded right back though as senior
Amy Dodd scored an old-fashioned three-point play with a layup and free throw to spur a 10-0 run by HPU, making the score 51-40 with 7:46 left in the contest.
Winthrop would not get back within single digits on the night as High Point pulled awaydown the stretch for the 64-49 win.
Junior
Shamia Brown was the only other HPU player to score in double figures on the night, scoring 16 points, with 12 coming in the second half. Freshman
Cheyenne Parker grabbed nine rebounds to lead HPU in boards for the ninth time this season.
Winthrop freshman DuQuesha McClanahan was the only Winthrop player to score in double figures on the night, finishing with a team-best 18 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals. The Eagles next head to Lynchburg, Va., to take on the Flames of Liberty on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m.
High Point returns to the road for its next three games, starting with a contest against Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C., on Saturday, Jan. 29. High Point is 6-0 all-time against the Blue Hose. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
