Senior captain
Julie Hershkowitz recorded 18 digs in the High Point University volleyball team's 3-0 win over Charleston Southern, moving in to second place all-time in the Big South Conference. Hershkowitz has 2,187 digs in her High Point career.
The Panthers improve to 13-11 (8-2 Big South Conference) with the 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-19) win over the Buccaneers on Friday night. CSU falls to 9-15 (3-7 BSC).
“This was a good team win,” said head coach
Jason Oliver. “We had good chemistry and controlled our side of the net. As always, I was pleased with Julie's performance. She gives a great effort and wills points for us. There were plays that could have gone to Charleston Southern and she keeps us in them.”
Senior captain
Megan Smith had a match-high 17 kills, along with eight digs while freshman setter
Maddie Simpson had 40 assists and 10 digs in the match.
In the first set senior
Stephanie Wallin controlled HPU's offense, putting down six kills on nine swings without an error, marching the Panthers to a 25-13 set win. HPU hit .387 while holding Charleston Southern to a .111 hitting percentage.
It looked like HPU would win the second set just as easily but the Buccaneers fought off four set points before a kill by Smith gave HPU the 25-21 set win. Smith and
Courtney Johnk each had five kills in the set.
Charleston Southern led 16-15 in the third set before HPU went on a seven point run with
Audie Gonzalez at the service line to gain a 22-16 lead. HPU would go on to win the set 25-19. Sophomore
Jamie McDonald made her first appearance of the season, tallying three kills.
Hershkowitz is HPU's all-time digs leader, reaching that milestone during her junior season. She is just the third player in Big South history to reach 2,000 career digs.
“Obviously it is a great honor,” Hershkowitz said. “But more importantly we got the Big South win and defended our home court. It was important to bounce back after the loss at Liberty and prove that it wouldn't break us.”
High Point will face Winthrop Saturday at 2 p.m. while Charleston Southern will travel to Radford on Saturday.
