Women's soccer drops tough 1-0 decision to Campbell

BOX SCORE

The High Point University women's soccer team played a strong defensive game but lost to Campbell, 1-0, on a goal midway through the second half Saturday night in Buies Creek, N.C. The Panthers fall to 1-9-0 on the season with the loss.

“We just weren't good enough today,” said head coach Marty Beall. “In games like this we need to step up and we just didn't do that.”

While Campbell managed to outshoot High Point, 12-8, in the game, the two teams matched one another in shots on goal with five apiece.

HPU earned the better scoring opportunities In the first half as sophomore Katie Taber (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) hit a free kick off the post from about 30-yards out in the 21st minute and nine minutes later junior Sara Rager (Silver Spring, Md./Paintbranch) forced the Campbell goalie to make a diving save with a shot from the right side to the far post. Despite the quality scoring chances, the two teams entered halftime still tied 0-0.

Early in the second half, senior goalkeeper Marisa Abbott (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) made a terrific play when she came out to stop a one-on-one situation in the 52nd minute. The Camels' Annabelle Gibney received a throughball behind the Panthers' backline, but Abbott came off her line to kick away the attempt on goal. Abbott recorded four saves overall on the night.

Campbell broke the scoreless tie in the 72nd minute as Tove Nordlander got in behind the HPU defense for a one-on-one and slid the ball past Abbott into goal to give the Camels a 1-0 lead.

High Point earned one final opportunity in the 89th minute as Taber got the ball behind the Campbell defense but Camels' goalie Jamie Parnell managed to save the hard shot to the lower right corner by the sophomore.

High Point returns to action on Thursday when the team hosts Belmont in its last non-conference action of the season. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
