A late second-half goal by sophomore
Laura Shupe (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) helped propel the High Point University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Wofford College on Friday night in Spartanburg, S.C. The win was the Panthers first of the season.
“Getting that first win is definitely nice and rewarding, especially for the girls who worked really well tonight,” said head coach
Marty Beall. “We played really hard tonight, possessed the ball well, especially in the first half. In the second half, Wofford stepped up their intensity and it became more of an end to end game. Our team defending was the best it has been all year. We had a lot more energy and intensity with our team defending.”
HPU controlled the run of play for much of the match but was unable to get on the board until the 70th minute when senior
Danielle Eldridge laid the ball off to Shupe who hit a great ball to the upper 90 from the top of the box. The goal was the Panthers first of the season
“The goal came from a great series of passes,” said Beall. “What we want to do is possess the ball and create opportunities with our passing. Which is what we were able to do tonight and Shupe stepped up and had a great finish.”
High Point held the advantage in shots for the first time this season, outshooting the Terriers 10-6 in the game. Senior goalkeeper
Marisa Abbott (Troy, N.C./Tamarac) made two saves to earn her first shutout of the season and the 13th of her career.
The Panthers will look to win their second game in a row when they return to Vert Stadium on Sunday at 2 p.m. to host Davidson College.
