The High Point University women's soccer team let up three second-half goals to lose to Loyola (Md.), 3-0, at Vert Stadium Friday night. Senior goalkeeper
Marisa Abbott (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) made seven saves in the game.
With the loss, the Panthers fall to 0-3-0 on the season, with all three losses coming against teams which had double-digit win totals in 2008.
The game remained scoreless after the first 45 minutes despite the fact that HPU was outshot 7-0. The Panthers defense contained a potent Greyhound attack, limiting Loyola to just two weak shots on goal from over 20 yards out.
The two teams were still tied at 0-0 in the 54th minute when freshman
Christa White (Cary, N.C./Cary Christian) made a run into the 18-yard box. The Cary, N.C., native got off a shot to the far post but the Greyhound goalie managed to reel it in.
Loyola would break the tie three minutes later with three goals in a six minute span to take command of the game. The final two goals for the Greyhounds came off corner kicks as the High Point defense was unable to clear the ball out of the box.
"We really struggled with set pieces tonight, said head coach
Marty Beall. "We didn't do a good job of taking care of our responsibilities and it came back to bite us. We need to learn from tonight and move on."
The Panthers return to the pitch on Sunday when they travel to Norfolk, Va., to play the Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion University. The game is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m.
