BOX SCORE
High Point University women's soccer fell to 0-2 on the season after dropping a 2-0 decision against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., Sunday night. Senior goalie
Marisa Abbott recorded seven saves in the loss.
Despite being outshot 31-2, the Panthers managed to keep the game close, conceding just one goal in each half.
"We really responded after a tough game against Wake Forest," said head coach
Marty Beall. "I am very proud of how hard we worked tonight. We came out and fought hard with them. I am really proud of how we possessed the ball tonight."
Virginia Tech controlled the ball early, earning the first goal of the match in the ninth minute with a tally by the Hokie's Kelly Conheeley from ten yards out.
HPU settled down after the initial 10 minutes and began to move the ball in the midfield probing for a scoring opportunity, but the team entered halftime still down, 1-0.
Tech doubled its lead in the 49th minute with a goal from just in front of the net off a rebound by Emily Jukich.
The Panthers made a strong push late in the match as sophomore
Laura Shupe came close to scoring twice in the 89th minute of play, sending the ball just wide of the net on the team's only two shot attempts of the match.
"Against Wake Forest, after we gave up that early goal in the second half we kind of collapsed a little bit but against Virginia Tech we gave up that early goal in the second half and we responded and fought," said Beall. "I am very proud of how we competed for 90 minutes tonight and I think the girls represented High Point at a really high level."
High Point opens its home schedule on Friday at 7 p.m. when the team welcomes Loyola (Md.) to Vert Stadium.
