Panthers fall to Radford in Big South quarterfinals

BOX SCORE

The High Point University men's soccer team fell to Radford, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the Big South Championship Friday at Gardner-Webb. The Panthers were down by three in the 72nd minute and nearly came back, scoring two goals late in the game.

“First, I would like to thank Gardner-Webb for putting this event together on such short notice,” said head coach Dustin Fonder. “Unfortunately I think the time off hurt us and we came out a little rusty. As the game wore on we got crisper but Radford had too big a lead and we couldn't come back.”

High Point scored first with a goal by Karo Okiomah (Austin, Texas, Hendrickson-Pflugerville) at 18:58. Matt Tuttle (Winston-Salem, N.C., Reynolds) brought the ball up the left side and passed it to Kendall Lawson (Virginia Beach, Va., Landstown) in the corner. Lawson centered the ball to Okiomah who pushed it in to the left corner for his fourth goal of the season.

Less than a minute later Radford answered with a goal by freshman James Jordan. Jordan pushed a rebound past Michael Chesler (Highland, Utah, Mountain View) on a scramble in front of the goal.

With just under 12 minutes left in the half freshman Shawn Sloan (Geneva, Ill., Geneva) nearly put the Panthers back on top. Shane Malcolm (Sunrise, Fla., Piper) had a breakaway up the right side of the field which he laid off to Sloan. Sloan's shot went just left of the goal.

The Highlanders took the 2-1 lead on a goal by Brian Gwanzura in the 42nd minute. Justin Zimmer took the corner for Radford and connected with Gwanzura for Gwanzura's fourth goal of the season.

The Highlanders tallied two more goals in the second half. Brendan Shaffer scored on a set play in the 53rd minute. Daryn Patricio tapped the ball to Shaffer on a free kick and Shaffer buried the ball in the top right corner.

In the 72nd minute Radford scored its fourth goal on a give and go by Mike Handlin and Brendan Iyiola Awosika with Awosika getting the goal.

High Point got on the board with a second goal when Sloan connected on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute.

Karo Okiomah scored his second goal of the match when he beat a Radford defender in the box and put the ball in the left corner. Hilaire Babou (Wheaton, Md., Walter Johnson) was credited with the assist.
