Men's Soccer Knocks Off Appalachian State 2-1

The HPU men's soccer team won a hard fought match with previously unbeaten Appalachian State by a score of 2-1.

Sophomore Scott Rojo got things rolling for the Panthers when he knocked one in the back of the net in the 26th minute.  The play started when freshman Will Stewart had a throw-in into the 18-yard box which the Mountaineer goalie punched out to the feet of Rojo, who calmly chipped the ball in the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.  Junior Hilaire Babou scored the would be game-winning goal in 55th minute for the hosts.  Babou took on a defender outside penalty box and fired a shot into the far right corner beating goalie Collin Taylor for a two goal lead.

"That was a tough match and a big win for us", said head coach Dustin Fonder.  "It keeps us undefeated at home with the great backing from our fans and support staff.  ASU is ranked in our region and a well-coached team so we hope to carry this momentum forward into the next game."

The Panthers got a good performance from freshman Michael Chesler between the pipes.  In the 50th minute, he denied a J.T. LaBruyere shot from 10-yards out to keep them scoreless at the time.  With 10 minutes to go, he made another spectacular saves on Sean Dreybus.  Appalachian State got on the board with 1:26 left to play when Ryan Maloney scored off a rebound from a LeBruyere shot.

Chesler picked up his third win of the season for HPU while making four saves.  In net for the Mountaineers, Collin Taylor played the full 90 minutes.

Also on the evening, High Point University partnered with Domino's Pizza and Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina to help reduce the hunger in our region.  Domino's gave away free food to those who brought non-perishable foods and HPU also donated a dollar for each ticket sold back to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina.  In all, the amount came to a total of $133 that High Point donated.

The win improves High Point to 3-2-1 on the season which is their best start since the 2000 season when they had the identical record.  They travel to Johnson City, Tennessee on Saturday, September 20 to take on East Tennessee State.  Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
