HPU men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw with Longwood with wet and soggy field conditions.
The Panthers were in complete control from the outset of the contest and almost got on the scoreboard at the third minute mark. Sophomore Scott Rojo hit a corner kick which found junior Hilaire Babou whose shot was saved by the Lancer goalkeeper. HPU almost hit pay dirt later in the half when senior Chris Shrum took a shot in the box which Longwood keeper Joel Helmick saved and then two minutes later Kiki Gonzalez hit a laser that just missed the left upper-ninety. After the first half, High Point held an 8-0 advantage in shots.
As play continued in the second half, High Point had some more chances to get the game-winner but were unable to do so. Rojo had a golden opportunity in the 50th minute but his shot just squeaked past the goal post. With 19:31 left in the contest, Shrum took a shot from 18 yards out which was on target on the open net, but a Longwood defender stepped in to deny the shot.
The defense for HPU was stellar the entire night led by senior Michael Earman, junior Ryan Puppolo, and sophomores Adam Hatem and Justin Pruetz limiting the Lancers to only five shots in 110 minutes of play and none of the shots were on goal.
"I want to give credit to our guys for not losing faith after a rough weekend and bouncing back today", said head coach Dustin Fonder. " We preached defense in our preparation for this match and the hard work showed off today".
In goal, freshman Michael Chesler picked up his first collegiate shutout playing the entire contest. In net for the Lancers, Joel Helmick made four saves while minding the pipes.
HPU hits the road Saturday, September 13 as they take on the Davidson Wildcats. Kick-off is schedule for 7:00 p.m.
