Stephanie Wallin, Ashley Mellott and Audie Gonzalez combined for 37 kills as the High Point University volleyball team defeated Charleston Southern, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-20) on Friday night in Big South action.
Wallin and Mellott each had 13 kills while Gonzalez added 11 for the Panthers (234, 12-1 Big South). Kristina Taylor recorded 42 assists and 13 digs for a double-double. Lauren Hatch had a team-high 16 digs on the defensive side.
For the Lady Bucs (13-16, 2-10 Big South) Amanda Hill had 13 kills. Sam Sasan had a double-double with 37 assists and a match-high 18 digs.
High Point and Charleston Southern played a close match in the opening set and were tied at 11. HPU broke open the scoring with a service run by Tara Dyer to take a 15-11 lead. CSU closed the gap to two at 23-21, but High Point rolled to the win with kills from Wallin and Lindsay Raus on the final two points.
High Point took a quick 10-6 lead in the second set. CSU kept the match close and was within two several times, but was never able to take the lead. The Panthers rolled to the win in the second set off of three set kills from the front line on the final rallies of the set.
In the third set the Panthers took a five point lead at 15-10, but the Lady Bucs cut the difference to two at 16-14. CSU would not get any closer as the Panthers outscored CSU 9-6 to close out the match.
High Point will be back in action on Saturday when the team heads to Conway, S.C. for a 4:00 p.m. match against Coastal Carolina.
