Tuttle Scores in OT to Lead HPU Past UNCA, 1-0

Matt Tuttle scored midway through the first overtime period as High Point edged UNC Asheville, 1-0 in Big South Conference men's soccer action at Greenwood Field Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (1-5-1, 0-1-0 BSC) missed a penalty kick early in the match and had several opportunities to score but were denied by Panther goalkeeper Adam Ross. Ross finished with six saves.

The winning goal came at the 94:03 mark when Tuttle picked up a loose ball and hit a rocket from 18 yards out into the upper part of the net to give High Point the win. The Panthers improved to 3-6-1 and 1-1-0 in the league. It was their third win in the last four matches.

"Any time you can win on the road is great," said High Point head coach Dustin Fonder. "However I don't think that our performance today was our most recent best."

Early in the match, the Bulldogs were fouled in the box and were awarded a penalty kick. Alex Morrow of UNC Asheville tried for the right corner but Ross was able to smother the ball and keep the game scoreless at 5:10.

Asheville outshot HPU, 5-2 in the first half but Ross made three saves.

"I give credit to UNC Asheville they played a great game with a lot of determination and at times I don't think we matched their intensity," Fonder said. "Now we have to get back on the field and get ready for ACC opponent N.C. State."

The Bulldogs came close to winning it with 12 minutes left but Caleb Alexander's header just inside the box went over the cross bar.

High Point will be back on the field on Wednesday, Oct. 3 when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. to face ACC opponent N.C. State.
