Box Score The High Point University women's soccer team remained unbeaten at home this season with a hard-fought 1-0 shutout over Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon at Vert Stadium.
The Panthers (3-3-2) earned their second victory of the weekend and posted their third consecutive home shutout by blanking the visiting Eagles (1-6-0). HPU is 2-0-2 at home this season.
The two squads battled evenly for much of the opening half as both teams tallied four shots and each goalkeeper recorded a pair of saves. High Point held a 4-1 advantage in first half corner kick attempts.
High Point finally connected for a score in the 32nd minute (31:18) when senior Beckie Lesh (pictured) headed a ball into the net off a throw-in-corner by Megan Fielden. Fielden launched a ball into the box from the left corner finding sophomore Laura Eldridge who flicked the ball on with a perfect header pass to a waiting Lesh, just outside the six-yard line.
"I was happy to get a positive result against a good team today," said HPU head coach Michelle Rayner. "Today's game was a very physical contest and took a tremendous amount of energy and concentration to remain competitive for 90 minutes. I thought we did a much better job in the second half winning balls and moving forward. It was good to see us get a goal in the first half and then hold the lead."
HPU's solid defense thwarted a pair of late GSU charges and the Panther offense kept applying pressure in the second half earning a 5-1 advantage in shot attempts during the final 45 minutes of play. High Point goalkeeper Marisa Abbott improved to 2-1-2 on the season after posting three saves in her third shutout performance between the pipes.
The Panthers hit the road for their next game on Sept. 30 at Wofford. HPU is scheduled to play its next five contests on the road including their Big South Conference opener at Charleston Southern on Oct. 6. High Point's next home game will be Oct. 17 versus Radford.
