High Point Falls to UNCG in Men’s Soccer

UNC Greensboro proved too much for the High Point University men's soccer team as they defeated the Panthers 4-0 on Saturday night at Vert Track and Soccer Stadium on  the HPU campus.

The Spartans (2-1-2) got on the board early when Matt Strine beat the HPU (0-5-1) defenders into the box and found the back of the net from the left side at the 5:37 mark. In the 21st minute the Panthers fouled UNCG inside the box to set up the penalty kick for Jokull Elisabetarson who connected to give the Spartans the 2-0 advantage.

The Spartans were not finished scoring in the opening period when Thomas Campbell took a feed from Matt Strine in the 35th minute and scored from just inside the left side of the box to send the Spartans into the break with a 3-0 lead.

In the 55th minute High Point again fouled inside the box to set up the second penalty kick of the game. Elisabetarson shot the ball straight to HPU goalkeeper Corey Whisenhunt who was unable to hold onto the ball, and Elisabetarson picked up the rebound to send it back into the net for his fourth goal of the season and second of the night.

High Point held the advantage in shots taken with 13 to UNCG's nine. The Panthers also led with five corner kicks to three for the Spartans.

The Panthers will be back in action Sept. 21 and 23 at the Marshall Classic Tournament in Huntington, W.Va. HPU will face Western Kentucky in the opening game at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
