The High Point University Volleyball team suffered a disappointing 3-0 loss on Friday to Connecticut in their opening match of the Mizuno Wildcat Classic hosted by Davidson.

HPU (3-2) saw a two-match win streak snapped by the Huskies (3-0) after falling 30-14, 30-17, 30-22 in their first of three contests this weekend. Junior Ashley Mellott tallied 11 kills to lead all players.

"I was disappointed because we played extremely tentative in the match," said fifth-year HPU head coach Chad Esposito. "We struggled with consistency in all facets of play. We were just never able to put anything together. We talked after the match and I fully expect us to bounce back on Saturday and perform much better."

Mellott was one of the bright spots for the Panthers on Friday finishing the match with a .444 hitting percentage after committing just three miscues in 18 attempts. As a team, High Point connected at just a .104 clip and allowed 12 service aces by UConn.

Sophomore Audie Gonzalez chipped in nine kills for HPU while freshman libero Julie Hershkowitz paced the Panther defense with eight digs. Freshman middle blocker Anna Lott led the High Point frontline with three blocks.

Kate Seabaugh finished with 10 kills to top the Huskie offensive and Jessica Isaac led all players with 13 digs in the match.

High Point concludes play in the Mizuno Classic with a pair of matches on Saturday. HPU opens day two action at 12:30 p.m. against event host Davidson before closing competition at 5 p.m. versus James Madison.
