Box Score Panther junior hurler Eammon Portice struck out eight and scattered six hits in 6 1/3 innings to lead High Point (7-8) to a 10-1 win and series victory over Jacksonville State (4-6) at Rudy Abbott Field on Sunday afternoon.
Billy Alvino, Pablo Rosario, Alfie Wheeler and Chris Norwood each finished with a pair of hits to lead the Panthers' 13-hit attack in the win. Glenn Jones, Mike Grosso and Chad Jennings pitched three hitless, shutout innings of relief.
The Gamecocks took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after Eric Beck walked to lead off the inning and came around to score when Josh Sanders doubled down the left field line to give JSU the early lead.
High Point tied the game in the fifth inning as Alvino reached on a one-out double and came around to score on a wild pitch. The Panthers took a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning on a RBI single by Rosario.
The Panthers broke things open with six runs in the eighth inning. JSU reliever Brian Booth gave up four runs and walked two in just 1/3 inning of work and Alex Jones allowed two more runs in 1/3 inning of relief as HPU built a 8-1 advantage. Matt Gantner, J. Williams, Wheeler and Max Fulginiti each had RBIs during the six-run flurry.
High Point added two insurance runs in the ninth inning for the final margin. Alvino doubled home Bill Manion then scored himself on a sacrifice fly by Gantner.
JSU's Donovan Hand (0-3) allowed just one earned run and eight hits in seven innings on the mound in the loss. Sanders and Garrett Bass each finished with a pair of hits to lead Jax State.
HPU concludes its current four-game road swing against Wake Forest at 2:30 p.m. in Winston-Salem.
