Box Score The High Point men's basketball team pounded Warren Wilson, 93-23, in the home opener for the Panthers on Monday night at Millis Athletic Center.
The 70-point margin of victory was the largest in HPU's nine-year Division I history and second biggest in program history behind a 71-point win over Guilford College (90-19) during the 1937-38 campaign. Warren Wilson's 23 total points were the fewest allowed by HPU since a 12-10 win over Elon in 1981-82.
The Panthers (2-2) shot 56.7 percent from the field for the game while holding the Fighting Owls (2-6) to just 14 percent. All 12 players that dressed out for High Point scored in the game with five players reaching double-digits. Warren Wilson dressed only seven players for the contest with four players tallying points.
Senior Mike Jefferson led HPU with 15 points while also dishing out a season-best eight assists. Fellow senior Arizona Reid earned a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double in just 19 minutes of action. Freshman Ibrahim Appiah, who made his collegiate debut after missing the first three games due to an injury, posted 13 points with sophomores Eugene Harris and Matt Boswell chipping in 11 and 10, respectively.
Aleks Spasovski scored 10 points to lead an overmatched WWC squad.
HPU jumped in front 10-0 to start the game, but led just 16-7 with 13:41 to play in the opening half. The Panthers then outscored Warren Wilson 39-3 over the remainder of the half, including a 21-0 run, en route to a 55-10 halftime advantage.
The Panthers continued their dominance after the halftime break holding the Owls to just three points over the first 10 minutes of second half play. HPU outscored WWC 23-3 during that span. High Point led by as much as 73 points (91-18) in the closing minutes with Warren Wilson connected on a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final deficit.
"I thought we had an outstanding defensive performance," said HPU head coach Bart Lundy, who improves to 5-0 in home openers and 19-1 at home against non-conference opponents. "It was a great opportunity for us to get our young guys some game action. Hopefully, we can build on this performance as we move forward with the season."
High Point will now enjoy a week off from competition before returning the court on Nov. 27 at future Big South opponent Gardner-Webb. That game begins a three-game road swing for the Panthers that also includes contests at Longwood (Dec. 1) and Dayton (Dec. 5).
