Box Score The High Point Volleyball team saw its program record double-digit win streak come to an end on Friday night as Liberty defeated HPU 3-0 (30-19, 30-15, 30-24) at the Vines Center.
The Panthers (19-7, 5-3 Big South) and Flames (19-7, 8-1 Big South) entered the match-up as two of the Big South's hottest teams with HPU riding a 10-match win streak and LU bringing in an eight-match run. High Point's last loss before tonight came by the hands of Liberty on Sept. 28 in the Millis Center.
The Flames were able to maintain their high level at home earning advantages in nearly every statistical category. LU hit .353 as a team for the match and finished with 21 more kills than HPU. Liberty also held a 10-3 lead in team blocks and tallied an 8-0 edge in service aces.
Juniors Lindsay Raus and Ashley Mellott both recorded 10 kills to pace the Panther offense. Freshman Julie Hershkowitz tallied 14 digs to lead the HPU back row. Liberty was led by Nicki Scripko's 16-kill/15-dig double-double.
Game one was a back-and-forth battle early in the frame as the two squads battled through 10 ties and seven lead changes. With HPU holding a slight 15-14 lead, Liberty scored 10 consecutive points to seize the momentum and push through for the 30-19 victory.
The Flames quickly jumped in front 4-0 in the second frame and extended their lead to 10-4 before High Point strung together three straight points to close the deficit. A few rotations later, Liberty again used a multiple point surge (8-1) to break things open and grab a 28-13 lead. The teams traded sideouts as LU closed out the game, 30-15.
High Point earned a 7-4 lead at the start of game three. Liberty scored four consecutive points to take the lead at 8-7 and then HPU ran off a 7-2 surge to regain the advantage, 14-10. The Flames moved back in front 18-15 following a six-point rally only to see Panthers claw their way back into the contest by knotting the score at 21. The score stayed close the rest of the game but a closing four-point run by Liberty gave them the match sweep.
HPU continues its Big South weekend road swing to Virginia on Saturday when the Panthers visit Radford at 4 p.m.
