Box Score HPU junior midfielder Leslie Long collected a goal and an assist as the High Point women's soccer team shut out VMI 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in Big South Conference action at Patchin Field.
With the win, the Panthers improved to 5-5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big South, while the Keydets fell to 4-9-1 overall and 0-4 in League play.
The Panthers struck first in the 28th minute, when senior forward Jen Evans collected her second goal of the season by finishing from ten yards out on a pass from the left flank. Senior midfielder Beckie Lesh started the scoring play with a service to Long who then touched pass to Evans for the goal.
Keeping the pressure on throughout the first half, the Panthers took a 1-0 advantage into the intermission. HPU tacked on the insurance goal in the game's 80th minute, when Long headed home a free ball from just outside of the goal after a wild scramble inside the six-yard box.
"I was very proud of the way we played today," said HPU head coach Michelle Rayner. "We did a good job of coming back from a tough road loss on Friday. I feel as though we were able to accomplish some goals that we set for ourselves today. For all the hard work and effort that this team continually puts forth, they just need to find a way to reward themselves with better execution in the final third so we can put teams away."
Angela Redmond played the entire contest for VMI in goal, netting a career-best 12 saves. She was opposed by HPU sophomore keeper Marisa Abbott, who needed to make only one save to preserve her fourth shutout this season.
In the contest, HPU owned a 29-1 advantage in shots attempted, while taking six corner kicks to VMI's one.
The Panthers open their final home stand of the regular season on Wednesday when they host Radford at 7 p.m. on the field of Vert Stadium.
