Box Score The High Point University women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision in double-overtime on Friday afternoon at Francis Marion.
The Panthers (4-5-2) played into overtime for the fifth time this season falling to 0-3-2 in extra sessions. With the win, Francis Marion evened their season mark at 5-5-1.
FMU's Ashley Fortune scored 1:33 into the second overtime period to give the Patriots the come from behind win. Taylor Jenkins played the ball ahead to Fortune who beat High Point goalkeeper Marisa Abbott to the ball and chipped a shot over Abbott and into the open net.
High Point senior Beckie Lesh gave the Panthers the early 1-0 lead in the 16th minute with an unassisted goal. Following a long throw-in by the HPU's Megan Fielden, the loose ball was knocked around in the FMU 6-yard box where Lesh eventually ended the sequence by ramming the ball into the net for her team-leading fourth score of 2007.
FMU nearly tied the match in the 30th minute, but a shot by Patriot sophomore Kirby Stenard bounced off the crossbar.
The Patriots did even the match at the 75:10 mark as Stenard tallied her team-leading eighth goal. Fortune began the sequence with a shot that eluded Abbott. Angela Salem kept the ball from going over the end line and fed a streaking Stenard for the short 3-yard shot into the open net.
Both teams recorded eight shots, while High Point held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. FMU goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin tallied five saves while Abbott finished with just one save for the Panthers.
High Point concludes its weekend road trip on Sunday at 3 p.m. against VMI.
