Men’s Soccer Falls to Wofford, 2-1

The High Point University men's soccer team fell to Wofford, 2-1 today at Richard Vert Track and Soccer Stadium on the campus of High Point University.

The Panthers (0-3-1) opened up the scoring in the game and jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when senior Chris Archer found the back of the net off a direct free kick in the fifth minute of play.

HPU controlled much of the first half until the 43rd minute when a missed tackle by the Panthers left the Terrier's (2-3-1) Chad Kite open to set up Joel Kozak for the game tying goal. The two teams entered the break knotted at one.

"I thought we got off to a great start," said High Point head coach Peter Broadley. "In the first half I thought we were playing well, we had a great goal by Archer to give us the early lead. Unfortunately we had a bit of a defensive breakdown that allowed Wofford to get back into the game."

Coming out of the intermission Wofford was aggressive and was able to put together a strong offensive run when Brandon Lowery took a rebound off of Panther goalkeeper Adam Ross to set up Reed Blair for the game winning goal in the 54th minute.

High Point retaliated with a strong offensive attack, out-shooting the Terriers 5-1 in the final 20 minutes, but was unable to connect with the back of the net.

"In the second half, I felt that we have a tremendous team effort," Broadley said. "We fought hard after Wofford's second goal, and had several chances to score, but we were just unable to finish. We continued to have some defensive problems in the second half, but I feel that they are all problems that we will be able to fix."

Terrier goalkeeper Joey Taylor had 2 saves in the game while HPU's Ross had one.

The Panthers will be back on the field on Sunday when they travel to Farmville, Va. to face Longwood. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
