The High Point University women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to Davidson on Friday night in their home opener and debut game at the Richard F. Vert Track & Soccer Stadium on the HPU campus.
The Panthers (0-5-0) settled down in the second half against the Wildcats (1-2-1) but could not overcome the two goal deficit from the first period. HPU was outshot 11-4 on the night including a 7-1 deficit in shots on goal.
"We just played poorly tonight," said HPU head coach Michelle Rayner. "We will just have to go back to work and play better on Sunday."
After a Davidson player was taken down in the box, Kristen Koehrn took the penalty kick which was deflected by Panther goalkeeper Hannah Nail. Unfortunately, the ball rebounded back to Koehrn for the easy score at the 13:36 mark.
The Wildcats added an insurance goal at 32:49 when Melanee Smith booted a rebound off another HPU save into the side of the net.
Nail tallied four saves in the loss while Davidson keeper Loring Ward tallied a save en route to her first win of the season.
High Point returns to action on Sunday when the Panthers visit longtime rival Elon at 1 p.m.
