FORT MYERS, Fla. – In a hard-fought game, the High Point University women's soccer team fell 2-0 in a game Saturday morning against Florida Gulf Coast University.
Head Coach Aaron McGuiness: "I thought we played much better than we had the last two games. We showed some quality moments and were unfortunate with a couple of our opportunities. It's just disappointing when it's a set piece and penalty that beats us. We need to do better in those moments. We have learned a lot about this group during non-conference and I'm confident that results will start to trend more positively during conference play."

In the first half, the Panthers and the Eagles traded possession until just under nine and a half minutes into the game. FGCU junior defender Lily Borders took a shot to the top center of the goal, scoring the first goal of the game.
Even with FGCU taking the lead, the Panthers kept up their fire when junior Sabba Haghgoo took her first shot of the game, and Ally Ruiz took another shot just seconds later. The Panthers went into the second half with four shots.
Coming into the second half, both teams were strong when the Eagles took their first shot of the half 48 seconds in. The Panthers stayed hot, taking more scoring attempts in the second half, finishing the game with nine shots from Haghgoo with two,
Brooke Potter with two,
Morgan Wilcox,
Kasey Resker,
Aleena Ulke,
Aubrey Bally, and Ruiz all claiming one.
High Point's defense was a force to be reckoned with in the second half, only allowing FGCU to take five shots. Just before the 84-minute mark, Sarah Greiner made her penalty shot, giving FGCU a 2-0 lead.
With a minute and a half remaining, Haghgoo was not slowing down, taking her first shot on goal in the game to try to close the gap.
Nylah Mirshafiei played the entire first half and fifteen minutes into the second before being taken out by Kylee Williams who finished the game for HPU. Mirshafiei ended her time on the pitch with five saves.
