High Point rallied from an early two point deficit before a goal in the 79th minute propelled Appalachian State past the Panthers, 3-2 on Wednesday night at Correll/Morris Stadium in High Point.
The Panthers (0-2-1) fell behind in the first half after the Mountaineers (5-0) scored two in the first half. In the second minute of the game ASU's Michael Walters hit the back of the net with a direct free kick. In the 18th minute Walters set up Juan Obregon on an indirect free kick for the second goal of the game.
High Point began the rally in the 23rd minute when Dan Haywood back heeled the ball into the goal off of an assist from Chris Archer. Appalachian State took a 2-1 lead into the half.
"Early in the first half I thought we were taking an undisciplined approach to the game," said head coach Peter Broadley. "We weren't playing the game the right way, we had players struggling to find their rhythm."
Coming out of the intermission Josh Windley and Archer connected to send the ball to freshman Hilaire Babou for the tying goal. The goal marked Babou's second goal of the season.
"Coming out in the second half I thought we were very disciplined," Broadley said. "I thought that Hilaire had a great goal to get us back into the game."
In the 79th minute Juan Obregon found McCoy Livingston near the goal to give Appalachian the game winner.
The Panthers were forced to play with a man down for the majority of the game when Haywood received his second yellow card of the game in the 25th minute.
Adam Ross had two saves for the Panthers. While Appalachian's Greg Walters picked up the win. For the game Appalachian had a 16-7 shot advantage over the Panthers.
"Appalachian is a very strong opponent," said Broadley. "I expect they will do well this season in the Southern Conference."
