Chris Archer scored two goals to lead the High Point University men's soccer team past Longwood, 4-0 today at the Athletics Complex in Farmville, Va. The Panthers improve to 1-2-1 on the season while the Lancers fall to 1-5.
HPU jumped out to an early lead at the 17th minute, when Archer scored the first of his two goals, taking a pass from
Cole Atkins and firing it past Lancers' keeper Brandt, who was coming out to cut the angle. High Point tallied two goals less than four minutes apart with
Hilaire Babou scoring in the 20th minute off of Atkins' second assist of the game while
Josh Windley found the back of the net in the 24th minute off an assist from Babou. The Panthers took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
"We had a tremendous first half,' said head coach Peter Broadley. "I thought the team played very well especially considering we're coming off of a three game stretch, having played three games in six days. So it was great to see how well the boys were able to play after such a lengthy stretch."
The Lancers pressed in the second half, looking to cut into High Points' lead. Chernor Diallo took a ball along the left sideline and dribbled in the Panther's 18-yard box. Diallo sent a centering feed that bounced through before any of the Longwood players got a foot on it and was cleared out by a Panther defender ending the threat.
With less than six minutes remaining in the game, Archer faked a defender for his second goal of the game.
"The backline was very good tonight," Broadley said. "
Chris Shrum,
Victor Harrison,
Harry Wilkes played excellent defense tonight and
Adam Ross did a great job in the goal for us. Tonight was a very good team effort. I'm really pleased that the team was able to pick up its first win of the season."
Ross had two saves on the night while the Lancers' Brandt Youmens also recorded two. High Point had the advantage in shots 10-7 and corner kicks 7-3.
High Point returns to the field on Sept. 16 when the Panthers host former Big South rival Elon. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Richard Vert Track and Soccer Stadium on the campus of High Point University.
