For the fourth time this season, the High Point University women's soccer team battled for 90 minutes but came up just short losing by a one-goal deficit, 2-1, at Elon on Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers (0-6-0) attempted more shots (8-6) and corner kicks (6-4) then the Phoenix (3-3-0) but missed out on several scoring chances.
Elon got on the board first when Molly Calpin took a pass from Alisa Petitt and slotted it past HPU starting goalkeeper Hannah Nail at the 9:34 mark. The Phoenix score was set-up by a Panther turnover in their defensive third of the field.
The Phoenix added what proved to be the game winner with just four seconds remaining in the opening period when Tina Longo placed a direct free kick from 22 yards out into the top left corner at 44:56 giving Elon a 2-0 lead.
High Point trimmed the deficit in half early in the second half (58:50) as junior Alex Torriero headed the ball past Elon keeper Lizz Johnson off a corner kick by Reine DeLaat. It was Torriero's first goal of the season.
Minutes later, Elon looked to extend their lead with a penalty kick by Petitt, but HPU freshman goalkeeper Marisa Abbott stopped the try and also a follow-up by Petitt to keep the margin at one.
Abbott finished the game with three saves for HPU while Johnson earned the victory tallying three saves of her own.
High Point will be off for nearly a week before returning to action on Friday (Sept. 15) at Gardner-Webb.
