Box Score UNC Asheville's Ana Baker nailed a last second three to hand the High Point University women's basketball team its first Big South loss, 51-50. High Point drops to 16-5 (7-1 Big South) while Asheville improves to 13-8 (4-4 Big South).
Leading scorer for the Panthers was junior Erica Brockmyer who tied a career high nine points. Senior Katie O'Dell added eight points and pulled down seven rebounds.
For the Bulldogs, Ana Baker led with 11 points while Stacy Shepard and Ashton Barton had nine each.
Asheville jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before High Point responded with three pointer from Candyce Sellars. The Bulldogs led through much of the first half until Ayonna Thompson made a lay-up at 8:12 in the first half to give the Panthers their first lead (16-15. High Point took a seven point lead into the break.
Coming out of the intermission Barton nailed a three to bring the Bulldogs within four. High Point quickly responded with a layup from Caitlin Thys. The Panthers went on a eight point run to take a 12 point lead (the largest of the game) before the Bulldogs responded with a 20-11 run to come within two at with a 1:35 remaining.
Going into the final minute Thys hit a lay-up to make it a two possession game, but Shepard responded on the Asheville end with a lay-up of her own to bring the score to 50-48 (00:49). High Point got the ball back but missed a jumper on its end and Amanda Elder pulled down the Bulldog rebound with 18 seconds remaining. Asheville brought the ball down the court and the assist from Brittany Hendley gave Baker the ball outside the key, with the time winding down Baker banked in a three pointer for the win.
"We didn't manage the game very well in the last three minutes," said High Point University head coach Tooey Loy. "While we played great on the defensive side of the ball throughout the game, I feel that we didn't attack their zone enough on the offensive side. We have to bounce back and get ready for Monday's game."
The Bulldogs held the slight advantage in the rebounding category, 36-33 with Kristal Hood leading with six boards. High Point was strong on the defensive side with eight blocked shots. Thys had a career high four blocks.
High Point will return to the court on Monday when the team plays host to Birmingham-Southern. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in the Millis Athletic Center.
