Box Score The High Point University volleyball team snapped a four-match losing skid with an impressive 3-0 (30-23, 30-21, 30-24) sweep over Charleston Southern on Friday night in the Millis Athletic Center.
The win upped the Panthers' season mark to 7-18 while improving their Big South Conference record to 5-5. With five league wins, this year's squad has now equaled the program record for conference victories set last season. Charleston Southern falls to 6-17, 1-9 with the loss.
"This was a much-needed win for our team," said HPU head coach Chad Esposito. "We have played well our last few matches but just didn't come away with the wins. Tonight we were focused from start to finish and played with a great deal of consistency. We have to continue to play at this level and remain focused for another important match tomorrow."
Junior Jamie Kaufman recorded her team-leading 16th double-double of the year finishing with 17 kills and 12 digs while hitting at a solid .308 clip. Freshman Audie Gonzalez also reached double-figures in kills ending the night with 13. Freshman Megan Kaminskas posted one of her best performances tallying eight kills and five assists while connecting on a .467 hitting percentage. Libero Lauren Hatch led the HPU defense with 18 digs.
Jenni Shepherd was the lone Buccaneer in double-digit kills putting down 11 for the match while Jillian Worby paced the CSU backline with 10 digs.
High Point grabbed the early advantage scoring the first four points of the opening game. HPU eventually built a double-digit margin (22-12) and did not allow Charleston Southern to get closer than six points for the remainder of the game.
After trading several points to start game two, HPU used a 12-5 run to seize the momentum midway through the frame. The Panthers again kept the pressure on the Bucs with strong serving and solid defense to earn the victory.
Game three featured solid sideout volleyball as each team got things clicking on offense. High Point hit at a .429 clip in the frame while CSU connected at a match-best .297 pace. The Buccaneers earned their first lead of the contest at 10-9 and maintained a slight lead over the Panthers until HPU rattled off four straight points to regain the lead at 21-20. After trading points, High Point recorded four more points to gain the needed cushion to earn the match win.
High Point returns to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Coastal Carolina in the Millis Center while CSU completes their weekend road swing with a match at Winthrop at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Panther's will honor senior Sabrina Wahid in a pre-match ceremony on Saturday.
