Men's Soccer

Winthrop Downs Panthers, 3-1

The High Point University men's soccer team fell to Big South Conference opponent Winthrop, 3-1, on Wednesday night at Albion Millis Stadium.

Panther senior Patrick Althoff scored his first goal of the season midway through the second half (76:19) to prevent the Eagles' shutout. Althoff's goal came off of a well placed assist from Masao Otani.

"Our second half performance showed how we can play," High Point University head coach Peter Broadley said. "If we can harness what we did in the second half and use it all game then we could fight back and win."

High Point got off to a rough start allowing two Eagle goals in the first half. The first goal came at the 13:40 mark when David Kenga connected with a missed shot by Sean Weron and found the back of the goal.

In the 31st minute the Eagles again found the back of the net when Otto Loewy set up Daniel Revivo for the goal. The final Winthrop goal came in the second half off of a corner kick by Kevin Green. Loewy was once again in position for the assist and was able to set-up Saidi Isaac for the game's final goal.

"Winthrop is a very good team," said Broadley. "They were able to expose our weaknesses and capitalize on those weaknesses."

In goal for the Panthers was Adam Ross who had six saves on the night. Winthrop's Patrick Mitrovich stopped five shots during the contest.

The Panthers have the weekend off before swinging back into action on Oct. 5 when they travel to UNC-Asheville. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m.
