Women's Soccer Shuts Out South Carolina State

Box Score

The High Point University women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the first ten minutes of the game then used strong defense to hold on for the 2-0 road victory at South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers (5-3-0) got on the board just two and half minutes into the contest when senior forward Wendy Williams buried a shot from 10 yards out after beating a pair of SCSU defenders in the middle of the box. The goal was her third of the season and proved to be the game winner.

High Point added an insurance goal just five and half minutes later as sophomore midfielder Alex Torriero collected a rebound off a shot from teammate Karolina Straby and beat the Lady Bulldog goalkeeper Ciji Sims.

"We definitely played with better energy today," said HPU head coach Michelle Rayner. "I thought we had much more effort on both ends of the field. If we can continue to play smart, simple soccer and outwork our opponents then we will keep finding success on the field."

Despite not scoring any further goals in the final 82 minutes of the game, HPU continued an aggressive offensive onslaught as the Panthers out-shot the Lady Bulldogs 23-7 and attempted seven corner kicks. SCSU's Sims kept her team close by recording seven saves while High Point netminder, Erica Brockmyer, tallied three saves en route to her third victory and second career shutout.

HPU concludes its month-long seven-match road trip on Sunday against Coastal Carolina at 2:30 p.m., in Conway, S.C. The match signals the start of the Big South Conference ledger for the Panthers.
