High Point Ties Liberty, 1-1

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point University men's soccer team played Big South Conference rival, Liberty, to a 1-1 tie on Wednesday night at Albion Millis Stadium.

Junior Chris Archer scored the first goal of the game less than one minute (00:53) into the contest. Archer was able to catch a deflection by a Liberty defender to send the ball into the far corner of the goal.

The Panthers' (0-4-2, 0-1-1 Big South) defense held strong until the 82nd minute when the Flames' (1-3-2, 0-0-1 Big South) Jeremiah Kappler found the back of the net. Kappler scored off of a corner kick by Brandon Patterson.

"It was a good team performance tonight," said High Point University head coach Peter Broadley. "We showed that we have the ability to score and the ability to compete in the Big South and at this level. Our goal is that we need to learn to win, we need to learn to defend at key times in the game."

Liberty led in the shots-on-goal category 8-5. However, the Panthers were able to hold off the aggressive Flames through the work of goalkeeper Adam Ross who had seven saves on the night with two coming during the first overtime period.

"I thought that Adam [Ross] played a superb game," Broadley said. "I thought that we had solid performances from Patrick Althoff, Josh Windley and Dan Haywood."

Liberty's goalkeeper, Kevin Mahan had four saves in the contest.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they play host to East Carolina. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Albion Millis Stadium.
