The High Point women's soccer team kept up its winning ways earning a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Wofford on Friday night in the squad's first road game of the year.
The Panthers (2-1) earned their second consecutive victory and shut out of the season scoring a goal in each half en route to the final margin. The loss dropped Wofford to 1-2 on the year and also marked the first home loss for the Terriers in the all-time series with HPU.
"I am very proud of this win because it was a tough battle against a highly organized team," said HPU head coach Michelle Rayner. "We played disciplined defense against extreme pressure at times. Our offense was efficient and capitalized on some quality scoring opportunities. Hopefully, we can continue to build on this win and improve on the little things."
Traci Anderson put High Point on the board at the 11:50 mark when she drove down the left side past the Terrier defense and chipped the shot over Wofford goalkeeper Austin Somers on a 1v1 situation. The goal was Anderson's third of the season and second game winning netter.
The Panthers iced the scoring late in the second half, at 84:59, when Meredyth Heppe crossed the ball to Wendy Williams, who then headed the ball into the net. Williams was among a cluster of players near the six-yard box maneuvering for position.
Senior Ryan Hays led the Panthers with three shots. Sophomore Hannah Nail played the full 90 minutes in the cage and registered six saves for her second-straight shutout of the year and fourth of her career.
Sophomore Whitney Steelman paced the Terriers with four shots, as Wofford held a 16-10 shot edge.
High Point continues its current month-long seven game road trip on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the Panthers visit Triad rival UNC Greensboro.
