Box Score East Tennessee State's Caleb Moore broke the school record for hits in a career (237) and RBIs in a season (71) as the Bucs defeated High Point, 21-5, Friday evening from Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn.
High Point (19-35) took the lead with a run in the top of the first as Chris Ramirez crossed the plate on a Randy Schwartz groundout.
East Tennessee State (30-20) tied the game in the bottom of the first as Moore hit an RBI double to left, scoring Shane Byrne.
The Bucs then scored nine runs over the next three innings to take a commanding 10-1 lead. Chuck Hargis began the rally with a two-run double in the bottom of the second. Later in the inning, Hargis scored as Byrne reached on an error and Moore hit an RBI triple.
In the bottom of the third, Nick Crowe and Mike Giroud hit back-to-back singles with one out before Buccaneer John Weddle belted a three-run homer to left-center.
ETSU plated three more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Stephen Douglas hit an RBI single to right-center and Weddle drove in a run with a double to left.
The Panthers scored three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the Buccaneer lead to 10-4. Justin Pinyan hit an RBI single to left and Ramirez drove in two runs with a single to left-center.
The Bucs then put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth, sending 16 men to the plate and scoring 11 runs. Moore hit an RBI single to left with one out and the next 10 runs were scored with two outs. Crowe drove in two runs with a single and Weddle followed with an RBI single. Hargis drove in two runs with a single up the middle and Moore hit a subsequent two-run double into the right-centerfield gap. Douglas capped the inning with a three-run blast to left-center, his fifth of the season.
The final run of the game was scored in the top of the sixth as Jon Pavlack crossed the plate on a Jerry Campos single for the Panthers.
Buccaneer Steven Calicutt earned the win (5-6), allowing five runs on nine hits in six innings of work. He also walked four and struck out five in the win. Caleb Glafenhein earned his first save of the season, pitching the final three innings and allowing two hits while striking out four.
Matt Christie was charged with the loss (0-1) for High Point, allowing 17 runs (15 earned) on 18 hits in 4.2 innings of work.
Ramirez, Pavlack, Campos and Mark Shorey each had two hits each for the Panthers.
The Bucs and Panthers play the final game of their three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m. from Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn.
