Box Score Senior Katie O'Dell scored her career 1000th point tonight in High Point's 76-68 victory over Longwood. O'Dell also notched another career double double with 11 rebounds and 25 points.
O'Dell hit her 1000th point on a layup with 7:48 remaining in the first half. In addition O'Dell picked up her 13th career double-double tonight with an 11 rebound, 25 point performance.
Junior Candyce Sellars set a new career high tonight, adding 31 points while Katie Ralls hit a new high in the assists category with eight.
The Lancers had four players in double figures. Amber Mason had a double-double with 20 pints and 11 rebounds. Leigh Macherin had 14 points and was three-of-three from three point range. Anna Steg and Keiva Small each added 10.
Both teams got off to a slow start with neither scoring until Ralls hit a layup at 18:24. The lead changed eight times over the next ten minutes of the first half until HPU's Raven Truslow made a layup to put the Panthers up 22-20. High Point never looked back and took a six point advantage 34-28) into the intermission.
Longwood was strong coming out of the break and cut the Panther lead to four when Steg hit a layup at the 19:38 mark. The Lancers again scored less than a minute later with a made three pointer from Mason to cut the margin to one. But HPU would respond with back-to-back baskets by Sellars and O'Dell, sparking an eight to three High Point run.
The Lancers again fought back to close the margin to five with 10 minutes left to play when Macherin drained a jumper, but High Point was too much for Longwood. HPU sealed the victory with less than four minutes remaining when Sellars made back to back three pointers.
High Point led by as many as 14 points in the second half.
The Panthers shot 47-percent from the field and 50-percent from three point range while Longwood shot 43-percent and 35-percent, respectively.
HPU was strong on the defensive side as well forcing 18 turnovers and stealing the ball 11 times. The Panthers also held the advantage in rebounding, 40-35.
The Panthers will enjoy a 10 day exam break before returning to the court on Monday Dec. 19 when they host Western Carolina. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in the Millis Athletic Center.
