Coastal Shuts Out High Point, 4-0 in First Round of Tournament Play

Coastal Carolina jumped out to an early lead on High Point and never looked back, defeating the Panthers, 4-0, in the fourth game of the 2005 Big South Men's Soccer Tournament Friday at Albion Millis Stadium on the campus of High Point University.

"It was a very disappointing loss tonight," said High Point University Head Coach Peter Broadley. "Especially since I felt that we were starting to play better here toward the end of the season."

Coastal got on the board first in the 28th minute on a High Point own goal, jumping out to a 1-0 advantage.  Jordie Hughes pushed the Coastal lead to 2-0 as he found the back of the net off of a China Maja assist from eight yards out in the 35th minute.  Daniel O'Brien closed out the scoring in the first half with a goal on a one-on-one opportunity to extend the Coastal Carolina lead to 3-0, Brad Stisser was credited with the assist.  Hughes tallied his second goal in the 50th minute on a penalty kick as Coastal Carolina went on to the 4-0 win.

"Coastal Carolina is a very good team," Broadley said. "Congratulations to them on a great season and a great win tonight. They played very well."

High Point had opportunities to score in the second half with shots on goal coming from Chris Archer and Josh Windley. The Chanticleers had the slight advantage in the shots category with nine shots while the Panthers had eight on the night.

"I'm very proud of our seniors," Broadley said. "Patrick Althoff has been a tremendous asset to our program. I appreciate everything he has brought to the team, tremendous leadership and play. Mark Gilbert has been a real stalwart, a real team player throughout his four years here."

Aaron Weant and Jeremy Wolf gang shared the shutout for the Chanticleers, with Wolfgang picking up two saves.  For the Panthers, Adam Ross notched two stops.

High Point ends the season at 1-14-3.

The Chanticleers (9-8-1) will face No. 7 VMI Friday evening at 7:00pm in the semifinals
