UNC Asheville exploded for three goals in the second half as the Bulldogs picked up their first Big South Conference win of the season by downing High Point 3-0 at Greenwood Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (2-5-1, 1-1-0 BSC) and Panthers (0-6-3, 0-3-1 BSC) battled through a scoreless first half. Asheville goalkeeper Michael Pereira kept High Point off the scoreboard with four saves in the opening half.
High Point controlled the first half as it outshot the Bulldogs, 6-4. The Panthers had a golden opportunity to score right before the half when Dan Haywood headed a corner kick that was stopped by the Ashville goalkeeper. Chris Archer also had an opportunity earlier in the half, but his 15-yard blast was smothered by Pereira
The Bulldogs got on the board early in the second half. After a foul was called on High Point, Asheville was awarded a direct kick. Freshman Aaron Harcz struck from 25 yards out to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. His kick went into the left side of the net for his second goal of the season at the 53:47 mark.
Asheville made it 2-0 at the 62:20 mark when Ryan Haupt took a pass from Chance Lord and scored from 10 yards to give the Bulldogs a two-goal lead. UNC-A's Andrew Klerekoper put the game away at 73:30 as he tapped in a goal from two yards on a nice feed from Daniel Bandoly to push the lead to 3-0.
High Point's next contest is Sunday when the team travels to Appalachian State for a 3:30 kick-off.
