High Point fell to No. 17 UNC Greensboro, 6-1, tonight in men's soccer action. The Spartans improve to 10-3-0 while the Panthers fall to 0-9-3 on the season.
HPU's Christian Morfaw scored in the 80th minute off of a Chris Archer assist to prevent the UNCG shutout. Archer crossed the ball in from the right side to set up the header by Morfaw. The goal is Morfaw's first of the season.
The Panthers held off the Spartans until the 35th minute when Scott Jones found the net unattended and connected for the first goal of the game and his second of the season. Jones was assisted by Mike Richardson and Jamie Carlson.
Going into the half the score was 1-0.
The Spartans dominated the second half of the game. In the 50th minute Michael FitzGerald caught the rebound off of HPU goalkeeper Adam Ross to put UNCG up 2-0. FitzGerald's goal was his third of the season.
Seven minutes later the Spartans would again connect with the back of the net when Jones scored his second goal of the game, unassisted from 20-yards out.
UNCG would score two more times before Morfaw would answer the Spartan onslaught. The first goal coming in the 76th minute when Carlson scored with a header off of a cornerkick assist from Jones. Paul Zazenski would add his own goal from 15-yards out (79:55) off of the assist from Richardson.
The final UNCG goal of the game came with five minutes remaining in the contest when Richards broke away from the Panther defenders on the left side.
"UNCG is a very good team," said High Point University head coach Peter Broadley. "We need to learn to step up against big teams."
Ross put up five saves in goal for High Point while UNC Greensboro's Jay Benfield had two in the win.
"I thought Adam [Ross] kept us in the game in the first half," Broadley said. "We had some good defensive players tonight. [Chris] Shrum played a good game and [Harry] Wilkes shut down one of their key scorers in Randi Patterson. I also thought that [Chris] Archer worked hard in midfield."
The Panthers will face off with Wofford on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C. on the campus of Wofford.
