Box Score High Point (5-7) had a total team effort to beat Norfolk State Saturday afternoon in the Millis Center.
The Panthers roared by the Spartans, 30-14, 30-16, 30-21.
As a team, High Point tallied 17 service aces and had a solid defensive effort with 13 blocks.
Lindsey Pickens lead the team with 12 kills and three blocks in two games played while
Kim Anderson provided 13 digs and four service aces and
Heather Butt dished out 22 assists.
High Point dominated the middle with
Tara Mahoney compiling five kills and six blocks while
Ashley Johnson had five kills to go along with five service aces.
Rachel Schamberger tallied six kills and four blocks to round out the Panthers' balanced attack.
"It was a combined team effort. Everyone on the roster had playing time today, and we maintained our focus throughout the match," HPU head coach
Chad Esposito said. "Our blocking was superb today which led to easy scoring opportunities."
The Spartans fought hard in the third game tying the Panthers several times, even as late as 19-19. Rachael Weatherspoon had six kills, five digs, two service aces and one solo block.
"We were able to hold our opponent to a negative hitting percentage, which contributed to our strong backcourt defense and blocking," Esposito said. "We had good all around play by several players. It is nice seeing our team coming together as one."
High Point will be back in action Wednesday night against Guildford County rival UNC Greensboro. First serve is set for 7:00 pm in Greensboro, N.C.
