Josh Windley,
Brindon Hall and
Alex Thompson scored goals and High Point held off a furious Wofford rally to claim a 3-2 win in the men's soccer season opener for both teams Wednesday night at Albion Millis Stadium.
Joel Kozak tallied both goals for the visiting Terriers, who fell to the Panthers for the second-straight season.
The Panthers (1-0-0) struck in the opening moments when
Patrick Althoff served a pass in the 3rd minute to
Luke Lemanski, who then launched a long pass to Windley, resulting in a nice header from close range to beat Wofford keeper
Joey Taylor for a 1-0 High Point lead.
Wofford (0-1-0) tied things up in the 31st minute when Kozak scored at close range before Hall put the Panthers back ahead just before intermission.
Richard Hanson tallied the assist.
The Panthers added what would prove to be a crucial insurance goal in the 49th minute when
Cole Atkins lofted a free kick from the right sideline and onto the forehead of the leaping Thompson, who gently redirected the ball across the goal line for a 3-1 advantage.
Wofford would pull within 3-2 in the 81st minute on Kozak's second goal of the game, which he scored after
Brandon Lowery's header bounced off the post just out of reach of HPU goalie
Matt Long.
The Terriers threatened until the final whistle, but Long and the rest of the HPU defense were able to keep the visitors at bay and win their season opener for the first time since a 2-1 win over Marshall to open the 2001 campaign.
High Point outshot Wofford by a slim 14-13 count. Taylor tallied four saves in his first collegiate game for the Terriers, while Long stopped three of the four shots he faced to pick up the win in goal for HPU.
The Panthers will try to stay perfect next Wednesday at East Carolina. Kickoff in Greenville is set for 3:30 pm.
