Baseball Sunk By The Citadel

Box Score

Josh Stackley and Andy Phillips combined for six hits and six runs to lead The Citadel over High Point, 14-2, in non-conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Riley Park in Charleston.

The Bulldogs scored in seven different innings. Chip Cannon (2-1) got the win for The Citadel, while Matt Kniginyzky (2-5) took the loss for the Panthers.

The Bulldogs got on the board with a three-run second inning courtesy an RBI single by Will Coker, a run-scoring groundout by Matt Covington and a fielding error that allowed Cannon to trot home. Two more runs came home in the third for a 5-0 advantage.

The Panthers (6-33) got one of their two runs in the fourth thanks to a run-scoring single off the bat of Jayson Hoffman. Three Panthers -- also including Chris Ramirez and Seby Renta, singled in the inning, which was capped off with Hoffman's base-knock that scored Ramirez.

The Citadel came back with one run in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to blow the game open.  During the three-inning rally, the Bulldogs plated six runs on six hits and were helped by a pair of HPU errors.

In the seventh, HPU's Corey Stang blasted his second home run of the season, a solo-shot to left. Stang blasted a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall for the Panthers' second run of the game.

Cannon went seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits en route to the win. Kniginyzky yielded eight runs (only four of which were earned) on seven hits and five walks while striking out four in five innings of work.

Renta had a team-high two hits.

HPU visits Elon for a Wednesday midweek contest before hosting Birmingham-Southern for a weekend series beginning Friday.
