Box Score Mark Egleton's single capped a three-run ninth inning and helped The Citadel rally for an 11-10 win over visiting High Point Saturday afternoon at Riley Park in Charleston.
The hard-luck Panthers, who entered the frame with a 10-8 lead, yielded the winning runs in the ninth inning or later for the ninth time this season.
Rey Rojas,
Mark Shorey and
Matt Richardson each had three hits at the plate for HPU, which outhit the Bulldogs by a 16-15 count and lost despite out-slugging its opponent in the hits column for the eighth time this year.
Evan Burgess picked up the victory for the Bulldogs despite allowing two runs in just two-thirds of an inning, while Shorey (1-8) was tagged with the loss.
Trailing 1-0, High Point put three unearned runs on the board in the second for a 3-1 lead after
Corey Stang and
Chris Draska came across on a two-run single by
Matt Richardson and Richardson scored after stealing second and then coming around on a base hit by Rojas.
The Bulldogs tied things up in the bottom of the frame on
Matt Matulia's two-run double off HPU starter
Josh Cotten.
HPU went up 6-3 in the third after
Chris Ramirez led off with a triple and
Seby Renta and Draska drew walks to load the bases. Shorey's single through the infield then scored Ramirez before
Anthony Bell brought home Renta and Draska with a base hit.
But the Bulldogs clawed back with a pair in the fourth and then two more in the sixth off
Clayton Gordner to assume a 7-6 advantage.
The Panthers see-sawed back in front with two of their own in the top of the seventh and an 8-7 lead when Stang singled home Renta and Ramirez. But the Bulldogs tied things up again on a
Josh Stackley RBI single in the bottom of the frame, scoring Matulia.
Rojas then gave the Panthers a 10-8 cushion with a two-run homer in the top of the eighth off Burgess which scored Richardson.
But the Bulldogs came through for three in the bottom of the ninth off Shorey to claim the win.
Chris Ard drew a lead-off walk, and after Shorey got Stackley to fly out, Stackley and
Chip Cannon drew walks to load things up.
Andy Phillips' double plated Ard and Stackley to tie the game, and Egleton's pinch-hit single scored Cannon with the game-winner.
