Box Score Stony Brook broke a tie with a pair of ninth-inning runs to win its third-straight game, a 6-4 victory over High Point Sunday afternoon at Erath Field.
The Panthers fall to 3-12 on the season, while the Seawolves of the America East Conference improve to 4-5.
Kris Bakey (1-1) earned the win in relief for Stony Brook, while
Mark Shorey (1-3) took the loss for High Point.
The hard-luck Panthers surrendered the winning runs in the ninth inning of a game for the fourth time this season.
High Point drew first blood with a run in the bottom of the third of Stony Brook starter.
Chris Ramirez was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a groundout and to third when
Josh Cotten reached on an error.
Corey Stang then drove in Ramirez with a double to right center and the Panthers took a 1-0 lead.
The Seawolves countered with single runs in the fourth (when
Isidro Fortuna tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Nick Theoharris) and the fifth (on
Matt Devins' infield hit which plated
Andrew Larsen) to grab a 2-1 lead.
But
Josh Doane tied things up in the bottom of the inning when he scored pinch-runner
Nick Thompson on a base hit to right.
In the Stony Brook half of the sixth, Theoharis laced a one-out single to left, and after HPU starter
Bob Helman retired
Dave Mischo,
Travis Motsinger came in to pitch for Panthers. Stony Brook's
Kevin Solano hit the first pitch he saw over the wall in left-center to give the Seawolves a 4-2 advantage.
The Panthers would rally again for a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth when a fielders' choice by
Anthony Bell scored Doane, and
Rey Rojas singled into left field to score Bell with the tying run and a 4-4 deadlock.
Stony Brook surged back in front with a two-out rally in the ninth off Shorey, who retired the first two hitters but surrendered an infield single to Devins and hit
Cole Cicatelli with a pitch. The runners moved around on a wild pitch, and after an intentional walk to Fortuna, Theoharis came through with a two-run single up the middle to score Devins and Cicatelli.
Seby Renta reached on an error in the Panthers' half of the ninth, and pinch-runner
Matt Richardson reached second after a fielders' choice, but Bakey got Stang to fly out and stuck out Doane to record his first win of the year.
Kevin Fitzgerald gave the Seawolves a solid outing on the mound, scattering eight hits and two earned runs over 7 1/3 innings. Helman also pitched well in a starting role for HPU, striking out five and allowing two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings of work.
The game was the finale of an eight-game homestand for the Panthers, who travel to Chapel Hill on Wednesday to face North Carolina and visit Charlotte next weekend.
