Box Score High Point held UNC Asheville to just one field goal in the final 9:24 and used a 17-0 run in the second half to take sole possession of second place in the Big South with a 58-52 win Wednesday night in the Millis Center.
The Panthers improve to 12-10 (6-3 in Big South play) and won their fifth game in their last six outings. The Bulldogs fall to 15-10 and 5-4 in the Conference.
Katie O'Dell led HPU with 17 points, while
Kate Jenner scored 13 points for the High Point.
Tonisha Jackson (20 points, 15 rebounds) and
Andrea Clapp (10 points, 11 rebounds) each posted a double-double for Asheville.
The Bulldogs used a 10-2 early run to open a 20-11 lead on a Clapp layup at the 6:51 mark. Jackson scored 13 of her points in the first half to help UNCA to a 31-24 advantage at the break.
Asheville pushed the lead to 13 points at 43-30 when
Brittany Hendley connected on a jumper with 13:53 left. The Panthers chipped away and pulled within 43-38 with 10:12 left on a
Tonya Tripp jump shot.
Jackson scored on a layup at the other end, Asheville forced a stop, and
Kristal Hood laid it in for a 47-38 lead at the 9:24 mark. The Panthers would then hold UNCA scoreless for more than eight minutes and put together a 17-0 run which featured eight points by Jenner to take control and surge ahead 55-47.
High Point's defense hampered the Bulldogs into 11 straight missed shots from the field during the run.
Two free throws by
Katie Ralls gave the Panthers a 57-49 edge with 24 seconds left. Hendley knocked down a three with seven seconds left to pull Asheville within 57-52, but it was too little too late and the Panthers held on for a six-point win.
The Bulldogs held a 49-33 edge on the boards, but turned the ball over 25 times -- leading to 25 Panther points at the other end.
O'Dell notched five steals, while
Timberley Jones tallied four blocked shots for the victorious Panthers.
HPU returns to the road Saturday at Charleston Southern for a 1:30 pm tip-off, followed by a Monday contest at Coastal Carolina.
