Box Score 2 High Point and Furman won one game apiece of a doubleheader Saturday at Furman Baseball Stadium in Greenville, S.C.
In the opener, the Paladins (1-1) edged the Panthers by a 9-8 count, while the Panthers (2-3) rallied to take the nightcap, 5-4.
Trailing 5-3 in the 6th inning of the opener, the Panthers rallied for three runs and a 6-5 advantage. Josh Doane drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a single by Matt Calcagni. After a double steal and a pop out, Chris Ramirez forced a base on balls before Corey Stang cleared the bases with a double to center off Furman reliver Matt Klinker.
High Point pushed its lead to 8-5 with a pair in the 7th. Matt Gorman scored on a wild pitch and Rey Rojas' bunt single scored Justin Pinyan.
But the Paladins rallied for four runs in the bottom of the frame off HPU reliever Matt Christie (0-1). A two-run single by Matthew Betsill cut the lead in half before Sam McLain scored on a wild pitch and Steven Hildreth came through with an RBI base hit.
In a last-gasp effort in the 9th, HPU put runners at first and second before Calvin Hurst got Ramirez to ground out to seal the win.
Rojas led the way for HPU in game one with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate -- including a solo home run in the 3rd -- in addition to two runs and two RBI.
In game two, the Panthers rallied from a 4-0 deficit to score the final five runs of the game and claim the victory. HPU got on the board with Pinyan's sacrifice fly in the 4th and pulled within 4-3 on Josh Cotten's two-run homer in the 5th (scoring Stang).
The Panthers rallied two score the decisive runs in dramatic fashion. Down to their final at-bat in the top of the 7th inning, HPU put runners at first and third with one out, and then took advantage of a pair of Paladin errors. Rojas came around to tie the game on an error by Betsill at third, and Ramirez scored the eventual winning run on a misplay by centerfielder Andrew Greene.
Mark Shorey (1-1) scattered five hits and three earned runs over six innings for his first win of the season. Travis Motsinger worked a scoreless ninth for his first save of the year.
High Point's home-opener is set for Friday, Feb. 20, at Erath Field in the first game of a three-game series against Dayton (1:00 pm).
