Men's Soccer Falls At Coastal Carolina

Jordie Hughes tallied a hat trick to lead Coastal Carolina to a 5-0 win over High Point in the Big South regular-season finale for both teams Wednesday evening in the Millis Center.

The Panthers drop to 7-11-1 (2-5-0 in Big South play), while the homestanding Chanticleers improve to 10-6-1 (4-3-0).

HPU goalkeeper Chris Michener made four saves in 55 minutes, while Matt Long tallied a save in relief.

Hughes scored the first of his three first-half goals in the 5th minute off a feed from Boyzzz Khumalo when he took a cross in front of the net and beat Michener to the left corner.

Hughes would strike again in the 21st minute, when he took a cross from
the left baseline from Khumalo and Itayi Pondwa and beat Michener to the right corner for a 2-0 lead. He added a third tally in the 26th minute for a 3-0 CCU halftime advantage.

After the break, Mubarike Chisoni scored twice (in the 56th and 67th minutes) to complete the scoring.

Daniel Walsh led the Panthers with two shots, including one shot-on-goal. Chris Archer had the other shot.

CCU had an 11-3 advantage in shots. The Panthers sported a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Both teams will await their seeding for the 2004 Big South Men's Soccer Championship, which will be played Nov. 11-14 in Birmingham, Ala.
